Grade 8 Takes a Position on "School's in for the Summer"

15 comments:

  1. I dont think we should have longer days because we are lazy and the countries with over 200 days of school that is there choice. Ours is to have 180 days and if we have more days it would cost more to the schools and state to pay the staff.

  2. Schools in For Summer Paragraph

    Dear Editor,
In the article schools out for summer, I don’t agree with them saying that we should be in school longer. I mean, kids barely like going as long as they do, and by the eighth month they are going crazy knowing summer vacation is almost there. Why would you make them stay longer? I don’t think it’s fair to keep kids in school for more than nine months because kids will go a-wall. Not only will the kids go crazy, but so will the teachers as soon as those few annoying students hit the wrong buttons, the teachers will just blow up. I don’t think it’s fair to the teacher to endure the pain of those few students, just like it’s not fair to have the students to deal with the teacher. So, would YOU want to deal with this???????

  4. First off I "Love" the 21st century economy quote. Second I heartily disagree with this man's opinion. I believe that the main reason that we should not increase the school day is that the breakdown of the family unit has begun to grow in America and the main contributor is the fact that kids are away from their parents so much. When children are away from parents they are learning from "Less than wholesome" sources, like students with very fresh mouths. Also, with all of the false teachings about how "Evolution is true". Kids need to be with their parents more often than not.
So in closing I suggest that we keep the school year the same. It has worked for many many years and our government needs to BUTT OUT!!! THIS IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!! I don't know about you, but I think that school is long enough and our government has "Fixed" enough. So anyways, our schooling time is fine. Don't even think about changing it.

  5. Dear School Board,

If they increased the hours or days in the school days. I think it should just stay the same, because if they change it a lot of teenagers or younger kids are going to just be like nope I don’t think so. And drop out, so the drop out rate will be higher than ever. And kids will get tired of learning the same subject for 6 weeks, you minds will just give them an “F” cause they will be gone forever. You can change it by maybe having study halls an half hour or something.

    Thanks,
    Angel

  6. School In For Summer.

    Dear,Editor

I don’t like this idea because we need more time for summer to have fun and play games so we can get all of our energy out and get ready for the school year. If we have more time in classes then people will get confused by all the work we are given won’t be done. And if our school year is longer than we won’t have enough time to see our family and friends. The more time when we have more school time then people won’t be able to play sports or other activities and if we don’t get a break every once and a while then people will just go crazy. So don’t have more school at all!

    Sincerely,Bryce

    Dear Editor,
I disagree with the author that wrote School’s in for the summer! The thought of school in the summer makes me sick! And I am sure that it makes other kid feel that way too. Kids need a break from school work and sitting in school for eight hours a day, it get to be too much. So I think that children in school need summer vacation. I believe that the school year should stay the same.
I know that when stress builds up kids tend to not care about there work as much as they would if they were not stressed. Getting a break is a good idea so children can get some free time to have fun, sleep in late, and not have work for a few months. Doesn’t every kid LOVE summer vacation and look forward to swimming, spending time with family, and having a lot of fun? Ya, I thought so. Coming from a eighth grade student I really hope that you understand that we love vacation and we love a break here and there. So PLEASE don’t take our summer vacation away!

  8. Summer Vacation Debate

I was asked to give my opinion on having the school systems changed. I read throw this article and disagreed. There was one topic that really blew me away, how someone could even THINK of an idea like that. The idea was that we’d spend 6 weeks with two days of only of one subject. So we’d only learn about science or math for six weeks, then we’d have one whole week off from school. After that we’d return and start another six weeks of one subject. I disagree strongly with this idea. Why? Well I’ll tell ya. I know that if I had to learn about one topic for six weeks, I’d get bored. I’m the kind of person that likes change. I also know based on my class mates that if we had to learn about the same subject, non-stop, we’d go crazy. Then we’d have a week of freedom. Once we come back we’ll go through the same thing only with a different subject and teacher. After pushing someone so much to learn something, sometimes they just give up. Especially when they’re forced too. Just like that we could be missing serious information, and losing a good education. I personally love the way my school runs. Are there things I don’t like about how my school run’s? Of course. But I think if America’s school systems change to something like this, many kids would be unhappy. Who knows, maybe some would like having they’re school run this way. But after you’ve heard my opinion and my argument maybe you’ll reconsider some of your ideas. If you go on ahead with this plan, that’s your choice. But I’ll be fighting for my opinions and for my voice to be heard.

  9. School’s In For Summer:

    Dear Editor,
I do agree with you in some ways, but I do not agree with you in other ways. Confused? Let me explain.
I agree that most kids in the U.S. do not get enough education because they don’t focus and don’t use their time wisely during school. Possibly by adding more time, this would hinder even more. This is the student’s problem. Teacher’s should help these students with this as much as they possibly can, but they can only do so much. Additionally, by adding more time during the school day, teachers would spend more time in each subject so the students learned more, right? That would be very efficient.
I don’t think we should add a lot more time in school, like making it year round! That would make most people go crazy! But, I do think by adding an hour to each school day would be very efficient. That way, each subject could be longer. So, the teacher’s get a lot more done and students also. As well, there could be more exercise for the students. Like, longer breaks and recesses. Awesome, right?
So, in conclusion, I believe that school should not be year round. That is way too much. But, by adding an hour and a more methodic system in school that would be exceedingly productive.
I hope you understand my opinion. School’s in for the summer, is not what I agree with, but school’s in for more efficient learning is what I’m in for! :) :) :)

  10. School in for Summer

    Dear Editor,
I think that there shouldn’t have summer in school. Not just because I’m a kid and don’t like school. I don’t want more school. People have enough trouble making it through the one-hundred and seventy seven days we have now. We need a big break. Kids around were I live generally hate school. The only thing they look forward for is to getting out. If you took away a big chunk of our summer I can almost guaranty that grades will go down not up, for those who have been in school for awhile. We will never be able to get away from it. We already don’t have that big of a summer. It gets cut, back every year. Almost no one wants to be here and taking away what we are looking forward to is going to make us not want to try. We don’t get a break until holidays and that only for like a week. We need To have a break or a scores will go down.
Next we shouldn’t make the school day longer because a lot of people do sports and other extra curriculum activities. We will still have some homework because on average I have five hours a night of homework. An hour a class. Than we sometimes have four hours a night. Well practice is two hours, dinner is a half-an-hour, showering is 15 minuets. Than the four hours of homework. We would be staying up till 10:45 on average every night. That is without spending any time at all with our families. Adding an hour would make us get less sleep and again make our scores drop not rise. That is why we shouldn’t add any more days or any more hours to our school days.
    Sincerely
    Ryan Colson

    Disagree or Agree? :P

I disagree! Why? Well, I will tell you why. I think we should keep the school year the same and I think that kids should have the summer off. Kids deserve the summer off because they are already overwhelmed by this much school already. I am being serious. But, I think a better system in school, would be great. :) Like, better teaching and learning. Also, more exercise would be awesome. But we don’t need school year round. We just need more efficient teaching and learning. You hear what I’m saying?
So, I am not in for school in the summer, but I am in for a better school system.
    Ya hear?

  12. School should not be longer. I guess you all kinda figured thats what a student would say. But its true. School longer? What are you people thinking?! Thats just not even cool. Kids need that long break from summer to be able to have fun and not have everything evolve around grades and good behavior. Whats wrong with having 180 days of school? We all seem to be doing fine. Kids work hard all year to have that big break from school and have fun. Why make there break shorter? What good will it do? You still have 13 years of school to go through. So whats the real point? I completely disagree with adding 20 days to the school year.
Another point brought up is having an hour added to each day! What the heck?! Why would we want that! It puts a burden on the teachers and students. And if you get a detention having to stay UN till five?! What is that! How would our educations get better when were gonna be tired as ever for that hour...barley paying attention to anything and not wanting to do anything. It could help. But most likely not.
    K.Bye.

  13. Dear Editor,
I don’t agree with having no summer and hence having school all year long because first of all we will move on to high school so much sooner. We won’t even be able to drive by the third year of high school because we will be so young. Then college and soon enough we will be young adults, no pun intended!
    Sincerely,

  14. Dear Editor of Viewpoints,

Not that I don’t think improvement in school is good, just what kid would want to spend their entire summer in school? According to Obama, American students aren’t in school long enough to compete with other countries. He is suggesting we lengthen our school year. I mean, don’t you think when Obama was a kid, he would hate being in school instead of swimming and playing baseball with his friends? Another statement he made is that the whole summer vacation was created for student who helped their parent plow the fields. I personally know a student that helps her family with the keeping and cleaning of their horses and barn. I guess even that may not be a strong enough argument. But I know what is.
Many people have told us kids that we need an hour a day outside, playing and getting our hearts pumping. When we are in school, all we do is school work and the majority of our day is sitting down in a plastic chair learning new things. If we have school year round, that’s what will happen almost every week of the year. I really don’t want that to happen. I mean, isn’t obesity the big conflict today? Hmmm, I wonder why. Sorry, but I really think school year round is a terrible idea.

    Thanks!

  15. Dear Editor,

I recently read an article about how students would benefit from a longer school day or school year. It had one idea that our school days should be longer. I disagree, I think that if this were to happen so many children would be at home less than they already are. Some kids do sports, if the school day were longer, some kids wouldn’t get home until seven or eight o’clock. I do realize that you might say, “Well it is their choice to play these sports, they must deal with their choices.” You are wrong if you say so. It is a true fact that the United States is the worlds most obese country. If the school day was longer, and kids couldn’t get their homework done, then they get in trouble once they get back to school, THEY WOULD QUIT SPORTS!

As I said before, most kids would be at home less than they already are. We children or teens are at home for an average of eight hours total. Most of that time is consumed by sleeping. If the school day were to be lengthened we would have to dip into our sleep time to make supper, that alone can take a half hour. Then another half hour to eat and talk, and maybe another ten minutes or more to get ready for bed. Brush teeth, etc. Is that enough time to spend with your family? Didn’t think so! Maybe you should consider all the facts before you publish an article next time.

    sincerely,
    Harry Larrabee
