The New York Times and Grade 8 Opinions

10 comments:

  1. Dear Reader,
Annoyance is an unpleasant state of mind caused by a nuisance. Some scientists believe that it is a diluted form of rage, or is dislike, disgust, and panic blended into one. As you can tell, it is a difficult topic for scientist to draw conclusions on. This being said, the emotion itself is not dangerous, but what it sometimes causes people to do is scary. It barges into your brain and basically takes over all your thoughts. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you how unpleasant an emotion annoyance is. Some vocabulary that comes with annoyance are petulance, which means being easily annoyed, and nuisance, which is something(or someone) that annoys you. Sometimes people let a nuisance continue without stopping it and it drives them crazy. This factor is used in a form of war called Psychological Warfare. This is when a nuisance is repeated over and over and increased in annoyance levels to defeat an enemy, overall being in control of this emotion. It was used in 1993 by the FBI to bring about the surrender of David Koresh and his followers.
In my opinion, annoyance is very agitating. Certain nuisances are worse then others, like humming in comparison to a crying baby. There are certain things that just get under people’s skin. Some of the more unnerving nuisances for me are people visibly wiggling their toes, tapping fingers, and itches on my back. They may seem minuscule, but that is because everyone has different things that make them go crazy.

  2. Dear Reader,
Many of us are aware of the man who caused 9-11, -- Osama bin Laden. Ten years from that day, the number one Most Wanted Person is finally dead. This al-Qaida Muslim terrorist was killed in Pakistan May 1st “during a confrontation with American forces who attacked a compound where officials said he’d been hiding. He was then shot in the head during a firefight and quickly buried in the North Arabian Sea.” To check the identity and be sure this was for sure The Osama bin Laden, his body was identified and had one-hundred percent certainty through DNA testing.

My reaction to Osama bin Laden’s death is simple and is one many probably feel. Relief. Some sick individuals may feel anger, but I agree with President Obama’s statement of, “the world is safe without the al-Qaida terrorist and mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks.” After all, was Osama bin Laden not the son of Saudi elite whose violent plan to recreate a 7th-century Muslim empire redefined the threat of terrorism for the 21st century?

  3. Dear Editor,

Many people have different opinions on whether or not cursive format is important to learn or not and I am here telling you my opinion on the matter. From what everything I have read and considered I think that cursive my not be the most important thing to learn in life but it is a useful in life.

I know that many people today don’t see the use of cursive but they don’t think about the exploration of history when the think this. Most historical document like the Declaration of Independence are written in cursive. I bet your patients and grandparents write or wrote in cursive. So to read things of older nature you would need to know cursive.

Though some people think that cursive will never be used in their lives, it will because it is used in all your signatures and checks. Also no one ever really knows where they are going to go in life and what they will do. Though you may want to grow up to be a police officer you may end up to be a historian or a Liberian and being able to read cursive will be an important task.

So to sum everything up I think that though you might not think you will use cursive in life you never know where you will go in life and by knowing cursive you will be more prepared in life for anything that comes in your way. Thank you for reading.

    Sincerely,

    Cody Weed

  4. Dear Reader,
Do you know all those times where there is a person across the room tapping their pencil on their desk or tapping their foot? Did you know, different things annoy different people but the fly appears to torture all mammals. Well, I am going to tell you a little about annoyance. In the New York Times magazine one researcher says “annoyance is the weakest form of anger, others might say it is a form of disgust, dislike, or even panic.” When you hear something that annoys you all your focus goes to the stimulus. Annoyance or a distraction barges into your brain and takes over all of your thoughts. Some scientists wonder why annoyances make us who we are? How does it make you who you are?

In my opinion annoyance is very agitating. Little things annoy me like the bouncing of a persons leg or nails on a chalk board! When something catches my attention all of my focus is on the annoyance. So think about it do things that irk you make you who you are?

  5. What is your reaction to the death of Osama bin Laden?
Osama bin Laden was an al Qaeda Muslim terrorist who was shot in the head and killed in Pakistan on Sunday, May 1st, 2011 during a U.S. military operation in his hiding place. After about 40 minutes after he was shot, the SEAL’s (Navy Sea, Air, & Land) flew out and quickly gave him a burial in the North Arabian Sea. It took 15 years to finally capture and kill Osama because he kept hiding and it was extremely hard to keep track of him. He did many dreadful things to the U.S. and other parts of the world. One example is he was part of the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa that killed 224 people. Another example is he was responsible for the U.S.S. Cole attack in the year 2000 that killed 17 American soldiers in Yemen. He was also the cause of the attack of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on 9/11/01 in New York City, New York that killed 2,752 people. He became a national enemy and was on wanted posters, gloating on video-tape, and taunting the U.S. and western civilizations.

“Do you want bin Laden dead?” a reporter asked President George Bush 6 days after the 9/11 attacks. “I want him - I want justice. And there’s an old poster out West, as I recall, that said, ‘Wanted Dead or Alive.’” Wanted dead or alive, Americans knew that Osama bin Laden had to be captured and killed because he killed over 3,000 people. Gladly, Osama is dead so now America and other parts of the world are safer from this sick mastermind. We should give a big thank you...no...we NEED to give a big thank you to our U.S. Armed Forces for protecting our lives every single day and removing this terrorist that has negatively affected America.
What is your reaction to the death of Osama bin Laden? What is my reaction? My reaction is I feel safe and feel that America has accomplished a great deed because of our hard-working, highly-deserving, U.S. Armed Forces. If it weren’t for these brave souls, Osama bin Laden would still be alive and trying to destroy the country he hated, America.
But, because of our U.S. Armed Forces, Osama bin Laden is dead and Americans are exceptionally grateful for that.
Is your reaction the same as mine?

  6. Dear Reader,

Unless you have been living under a rock like Bin laden, you know that our heroic forces captured and shot this terrorist scumbag in the head. Some of you may have known someone who was killed in the 9/11 terrorist attack. This happened when Muslim terrorists hijacked 2 planes and crashed them into the twin towers. This was masterminded by Osama Bin Laden, a man who hates America and anyone who opposes his idea of a seventh century Muslim empire, over the entire world.

Over the past ten years he has been hiding in a cave even as he claims to be so brave and says that the U.S.A. will fall (he never really proved this as he spent the last TEN YEARS of his life cowering in a cave in Pakistan). Our forces and our country searched and searched for this man to find and kill him. Finally on Sunday March First at around 6:38 ECT a group of American troops (which may have included the famed SEAL Team SIX, the green berets, K.A.G. troopers, and Delta force commandos.) breached the Pakistan compound where Osama Bin Laden was hiding. At approximately 6:43 the compound was secured and Osama Bin Laden was finally dead. The news was sent to the pentagon and the rest of the government buildings and at 7:31 a leak in the government actually tweeted the news for the first time. At 10:30 President Obama went live and announced: “Osama Bin Laden Is dead and Justice has finally been served!”

Crowds swarmed the streets in celebration as one of the greatest days in America began! The cheers of “USA! USA! USA!” filled the streets. The hearts and minds of all true Americans were filled with joy at the death of the evil dictator, The murderer, the evil pig the planned 9/11. A time for celebration is at hand! Celebrate the fact that the middle east is now going to be that much closer to being a won war! The sooner we win the war against terrorism the sooner our boys can come home! So in Conclusion, I feel that we have now served justice against the sick mind that planned 9/11. We also managed to take out Omar Kadahfi’s son and three of his grandchildren. We are rolling up loose ends everywhere! So in the spirit of a true American these events make me say GOD BLESS AMERICA!

(If that offends you.....well just go live in Pakistan.)

  7. Dear reader,

According to the New York time Osama Bin Ladin was killed in Pakistan on Sunday May 1st.

I think it’s good that Osama Bin Ladin has been eliminated but I think that Alqueda might just gain a new leader that could be worse than Osama was. I wasn’t really excited to hear about his death considering he was missing for so long and I stopped caring, but I’m also glad that Alqueda doesn’t have a leader to tell them to do radical things.

  9. Scream Zone

    Dear Reader,
What are you looking forward to this summer? Well, in New York City, at Coney Island, there is a new amusement part called Scream Zone. It just opened April 20th, 2011, with an opening ceremony. All week was gloomy, but they are still ready to open for new spine-tingling rides at America’s greatest seaside destination. Scream Zone will operate along with Luna Park, which opened last year and drew 450,000 people to Coney Island. Luna Park boasts two roller coasters, which are the first major ones since the terrifying rickety Cyclone in 1927. Scream Zone is ne place where you can scream as loud and as much as you want, and no one will call 311 to complain.
When Scream Zone wasn’t completed, Luna Park managed to dish out its own set of thrill rides, except not as extreme as Scream Zone’s rides. All rides and attractions are made by Zamperla, which is an Italian amusement ride company. After the parks opened, the Ringling Brothers Circus and Barnum & Bailey circus closed. Businesses in question were fighting eviction after contracts weren’t renewed. Scream Zone sued Central Amusement International, before they were allowed to stay for the 2011 season as part of negotiations. Scream Zone wasn’t full completed, but two rides were ready; the Zenobio and the Sling Shot. The Zenobio and Sling Shot aren’t your standard amusement park stock.
So, let me ask you this:
What are YOU looking forward to this summer?
